Tradition and new trends at Brussels Weekend of Beer

Monday, 08 September 2014 17:17
More than 70,000 people sampled the 400 different types of beer offered by fifty small, medium and large Belgian breweries on Friday night and throughout the weekend on the Grand Place in Brussels.

"Belgian Beer Weekend", which attracted 70,000 visitors, last year, highlighted the richness of the traditional range of specialty beers produced in Belgium. More contemporary trends, such as limited editions of raw brewing, raised casks of wine or brandy, the revival of "Stouts" marked by hints of coffee, or the very British "IPA" (India Pale Ale) which are never free from bitterness were also displayed..

Encouraged by the good weather, the 16th edition of this annual weekend organized by Belgian Brewers successfully attracted its usual crowd. Today's event attracted curious participants from around the world, who were attracted by the almost universal reputation gained by these "made in Belgium" beers, served in the incomparable setting of the Grand Place.

This year, a National Bar installed behind the Exchange building, close to the Grand Place, completed the party. Amateurs were able to sample beers in 75cl bottles,  as well as in glasses stamped with the slogan"Proud of our Beers."

According to the chairman of the organizing committee, Alain De Laet,  the "Proud of our beers"  campaign has strengthened the quality and user-friendly image of Belgian beers.  De Laet believes that for importers around the world, the weekend of Belgian beer has become the ultimate place to be.

Various activities related to the world of beer surrounded the event:  A Mass and benediction was held at Saint Michel and Gudule Cathedral, a historical procession of vehicles and brewery carts, etc.
